If your processor is compatible with your current motherboard, no.

umm well it takes little research really.

One way is to compare your old cpu to the one u plan on buying. The specs ALWAYS say which type of motherboard to use. If they both have the same type, then ur good to go

a straightforward thing is obv. amd cpu's dont work on intel motherboards, and vise versa

If ur not up to 5 minutes of research, then post the name of your current cpu and we can tell u some of the options

When comparing all you need to look for is the socket really, as they told you they are both Socket AM2, which means it will go smoothly :)

Make sure the motherboard you have works good with your RAM.

Well to be honest with you, an AM2 mother board is reaallly old. like oold old.

Im guessing you could look through buying any of the AMD Phenoms ( not the second edition , the first edition ), Athlon 64s

basically is all.

Just a straight out guess, but i think that the processor you have right now is already pushing your am2 motherboard's limits.

i think the point of this is so that he doesnt change his motherboard.

and am3 is ddr3 only
